Anyone who speaks multiple languages is multilingual. In the context of North American higher education in art & design, the term multilingual student refers to students who speak languages other than English as mother tongues. Programs and classes for multilingual students, and often the student body itself, are variously referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL), English Language (EL), English Language Learning/Learners (ELL), and English as an Additional Language (EAL), among other designations. Multilingual students may be called international students; however the two terms are not necessarily synonymous. Some may have spent extensive time in a country where English is a primary language while others have not, but they have all chosen to pursue art & design education in English-language contexts.
